First Lady Michelle Obama & Dr. Jill Biden to Launch Military Families Initiative April 12th

A Nationwide Call to Action

First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden will launch a national initiative to support and honor America’s service members and their families on Tuesday, April 12th at the White House.

The initiative aims to educate, challenge, and spark action from all sectors of our society — citizens, communities, businesses, non-profits, faith based institutions, philanthropic organizations, and government — to ensure military families have the support they have earned.

In the days following the launch, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden will travel across the country to highlight the courage and strength of our military families, and the ability of our veterans and military spouses to strengthen our communities.  They will also meet with men and women who are taking action, and lending a hand to those that have served our Nation.

For years, Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden have been committed to supporting our Nation’s military families, advocating for their priorities, and shedding light on their stories.  They have visited military communities at home and abroad, learned about the unique challenges our troops, veterans and their families face, and have seen firsthand the commitment to service that defines so many of our military families.  This initiative builds on the President’s directive to establish a coordinated and comprehensive Federal approach to supporting military families, and will work to reconnect military families with all communities.

Dennis – I can tell you that this program has been in development for months. If you read the far reaching breadth and depth of the program you’ll realize just how much time and effort went into launching this initiative. Here at Blue Star Families we’ve long been troubled by the divide appearing between our military and civilian communities, with our research showing that more than 92% of military families feeling as if the civilian public doesn’t truly understand or appreciate the sacrifices made by military families.
So we were heartened to hear of this initiative that for the first time really attempts to make everyone, our communities, companies, organizations and individuals, have some sort of “skin in the game.” The First Lady has long been a champion of military families and this is just the latest in her far reaching efforts to make life better for our military families.

As the parent of an active duty soldier completing his 10th year of service I welcome any initiative that recognizes the sacrifices being made by our military men and women and their families, but I am troubled that it comes just a week after our government narrowly avoided cutting off all pay to the military. Where was the concern last week for our military families? Sorry, but I can’t help feeling as though Campaign 2012 is now in full swing.
