OPSEC info for wife to be Adrienne

Dear Milies,

So, it is getting closer and closer to the 'big day' of me becoming an Army Wife! However, I see all over about OSPEC and would really love some clarification. I have been looking around a little, but would love to hear it from you ladies who deal with it on a daily basis.

Adrienne, we're so very excited for you regarding your upcoming nuptials and wish you the very best of luck with the preparations and the actual ceremony.

To answer your question about OPSEC. You can check out www.heartsofourtroops.com to get a detailed explanation of what OPSEC is and the guidelines to follow. As military wives we want to shout to the world about how proud we are of our husbands. It's completely understandable, however, we have to make sure that their safety and well being is a top priority. So there are some ways to ensure we do our part to help keep them safe. There are also ways to help keep ourselves safe because although our husbands will be the ones on the front line, military wives can also mistakenly place themselves in danger by putting out certain info online or even throughout our residential communities. So check out the website and it'll break down the precautions to take to help keep everyone safe but still show your support to your husband.

We really appreciate that you want to educate yourself on OPSEC because there are families out there who don't take it seriously enough. That being said we hope you'll find with experience that OPSEC is not censorship, its basically just using good common sense. It doesn't prevent you from expressing your pride or venting about your husband being away, it just doesn't want you to tell things like the city he's in or the date he'll return from a deployment. OPSEC is not in place to stifle a military wife but simply to protect the one she loves. Remembering to say things without giving details doesn’t have to be stumbling block at all.

Best of luck!

~Kerry-Ann
