My dad just got back from one year at war in Afghanistan. I know that for someone who's not part of a military family this might sound unimaginable, but for me it's part of my life. Since I'm only 12, this war and the things that come with it are the only thing I've ever known.

What a summer this has been for military families, thanks to the Blue Star Museum program! My kids and I travelled up the east coast late June through early August, stopping at museums along the way. The exhibits themselves were wonderful, great for any American family. But there was something very special for us as a military family, in every place that we went. We felt welcome, and even more, we felt reflected in what we saw.
This summer my family is going on a huge road trip. The theme of our road trip is friends, family and museums. This blog is about the museums we visited on our road trip. The museum I'm going to tell you about is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which has been my favorite museum so far. While visiting some friends in New York we decided to stop by the Met.
At the event announcing Blue Star Museums in San Diego on May 24, we stood on the steps of the San Diego Museum of Art, which sported a banner for their exhibit of Greek antiquities that said "Heroes." That struck me as appopriate, because on that day Rocco Landesman and the NEA and the Blue Star Museums were - and are -- my heroes. This program of free museums for military families over the summer is just extraordinary.
